Jeffrey Epstein's Involvement With The Edge Foundation

John Brockman was the founder of the foundation called Edge Foundation: Third Culture and for many years Jeffrey Epstein is an active and encouraging member of this group.

May 1, 2012 - PRLog -- Brockman founded it in 1988 as an intimate, and by-invite only group, of some of the most interesting and cutting minds in the world of thought. Many of the Edge Foundation's affiliates are friends of Jeffrey Epstein, and he has preferred to support the work of number of Edge members via the Jeffrey Epstein Foundation.

Brockman was inspired by C.P. Snow's classic work, The Two Cultures, first released in 1959, which explored the communications gap between literary "intellectuals" and scientific "intellectuals." Snow labeled these the Two Cultures. Later, Snow, elaborated how much was dropped because of the effect of essentially two "different vocabularies," which made it effectively difficult to connect. The line of connection between the scientists and artists is problematic. There is almost absolutely nothing that can prevent them from comprehending each other. Even in the arts, the artists tend to dismiss scientists who find mathematical symmetries like the works of MC Escher stunning simple because for them what matters is the power of the painting to attract emotion from the viewer through the use of light, tone, color, and technique. It essentially came down to the scientist looking at a contemporary art abstraction, and saying, "I don't get it," and the artist listening to the scientist, and declaring "I don't understand it.". As Jeffrey Epstein said, this resembles the story I read about physicist Richard Feynman who decided to trade lessons in physics for lessons in art with his friend, the artist, Jyair Zorthian. While Feynman was able to become a fairly decent draftsman, Zorthian, just couldn't pick up on the physics, much less the fundamental beauty of electromagnetism that Feynman tried to present him with a coiled magnet. In that circumstance, a disaster took place because the Two Cultures clashed despited Fynman's reputation as an outstanding physics teacher.

This gap is still present up even today. In 1963, Snow added a new essay, "The Two Cultures: A Second Look," in which he suggested that humanity would be greatly benefited by having this gap of communication close, so that not only could the Two Cultures benefit, but humanity would be enriched well. Snow coined this party the Third Culture. Brockman used this as the basis of his decision to create a party that is composed of artists and intellectuals who all have different focus in order to come up with a forum that will tackle anything and everything and allow the audience to gain entry into the deepest thoughts of these thinkers.

As the publisher, Brockman acts like a glue to these people by organizing events that allow them to share their candid thoughts and opinions on the various questions thrown at them, their answers to these questions are then compiled in a collection of Edge essays.

Every year, Brockman issues a new query, and it is dutifully responded to by many members of the Third Culture. Some of the queries can be profound and deep, others philosophical, and others, quite mundane. However, if you consider the individuals who are going to reply these questions, surprises should be expected. It is the imagination at play that's so much fun to view.

Some replies to his questions are too glib, others, cynical, some downright idiotic, but there is enough richness in content to satisfy and stimulate even the casual curious mind. When Jeffrey Epstein is asked about a good place to start, he would merely respond " If the quest is for richness and originality of thought amidst the world's elite minds then I recommend Brock's yearly query as the best place to begin with."
