Technology-Enhanced Classrooms Help Students Advance

Academic Concepts Tutoring has implemented the use of Smartboard technology in its classrooms at the Boca Raton- based tutoring center. Smartboards are interactive whiteboards that allow users to collaborate and make contributions in a group setting.Carrisa Penn, Academic Director of Academic Concepts Tutoring, is pioneering the use of Smartboard technology in the center’s classrooms.

“We’re using technology to engage students in the learning process and to give teachers the opportunity to capture key information to help each student.” Math competitions using Smartboard technology are a common sight at Academic Concepts Tutoring.  Instructors work with a small group of students in the same grade level and form teams of students. They create a fun, competitive environment where students compete to answer math problems posted on the Smartboard.

“This technology is really fun and engaging for students,” notes Penn. “At the same time, our instructors are making critical observations of how each student responds- they’re noting which problem sets are completely mastered as well as which skills need more practice in order to reach complete mastery.” Instructors at Academic Concepts Tutoring use this technology to discover how quickly a student is able to solve specific problems as well as which particular areas need additional explanation or practice. The Smartboard technology facilitates the individualization of each student’s tutoring plan.
Penn continues, “Our students love the competitions, and we constantly strive to use this information to put each student on a better academic path.” Math competitions are just one application of the technology in Academic Concepts Tutoring classrooms; they are also used for reading comprehension and problem solving activities.
