By: IntelliTec College in Colorado Springs The NASCAR Race Shop in Denver is home to the Furniture Row Racing team and their staff. Joe Garone, former Director of NASCAR’s Research and Development facilities and Head of Officiating, leads this unique team. The decision to locate the shop in Denver was directly related to the location of Furniture Row, the team sponsor. This is the only NASCAR Sprint Cup team west of the Mississippi. The team uses this facility to assemble, test and maintain their cars, tools and machinery. Automotive program instructor Martin Michelon took the High Performance automotive class to Denver on April 26th to visit the NASCAR shop. IntelliTec’s automotive training school students were impressed at the detail and cleanliness of a fully functioning shop. They toured the facility and learned about daily operations. They also saw real NASCAR workers in action and learned how each technician performed their specific with the highest efficiency. Additionally, they were allowed to put a car on the chassis dynamometer and run it through its paces. Overall, they learned specifics about race car fabrication, construction and engine(s), along with all aspects of building a race car. This group of IntelliTec College students from Colorado Springs expressed positive feedback and said they enjoyed their visit, as it was an amazing experience. Automotive Program Supervisor Dave Gorman says that “the students loved it. It totally related to our studies in the High Performance Engines [class]. It demonstrated that hard work pays off. This is a dream come true for anyone interested in NASCAR, to land a job on a NASCAR team.” The students were in full dress uniform, shirts tucked in and hair combed. This level of professionalism is something that will be expected of them in the real world, which made this experience kind of like a dress rehearsal for their future careers. Field trips like this one are designed to keep students’ interest alive as well as expose them to a real working environment.
