New Health Services and Center to Address Growing Need, First of its Kind in Los Gatos

Groundbreaking at Retirement Community to Celebrate New Memory Care Center

June 13, 2012 - PRLog -- LOS GATOS, Calif. – The Terraces of Los Gatos Retirement Community will break ground on a project to build The Grove, the first memory care and support center in the Town of Los Gatos. The groundbreaking celebration will take place on June 19. Plans also include expanding the community’s assisted living accommodations. Overall, the $5.5 million project includes a 22,000-square foot, two-story addition with a total of 26 assisted living and memory care suites. It will address a growing need in the Town of Los Gatos and a health issue that’s rapidly rising in California and across the country.

“It’s really unfortunate to see someone have to go outside of Los Gatos to visit a loved one who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease or some other type of dementia,” says Alex Candalla, executive director at The Terraces of Los Gatos Retirement Community. “We’re pleased that we will now have this program available here on our campus and in our town.”

The number of Californians who suffer from a type of dementia is expected to rise by approximately one-third over the next decade, according to the Alzheimer’s Association Disease Facts and Figures. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, but other types include loss in memory or cognitive skills. The statistics also show that an estimated 5.4 million people in the United States – including half a million in California alone – have Alzheimer’s disease. And the association projects those numbers to triple by the year 2050.

“We’re always focused on enhancing the lifestyle, well-being and security of older adults in the Silicon Valley and meeting their ever-changing needs,” says Candalla. Construction of The Grove is expected to be complete by summer of 2013. The special groundbreaking ceremony will take place at The Terraces of Los Gatos on Tuesday, June 19, at 2 p.m. The Mayor of Los Gatos, Steve Rice, is among the civic and community leaders scheduled to speak. Media is welcome to attend.
