June 18, 2012 - PRLog -- Last week, the Chicago Tribune reported that employees at the Deerfield High School have complained that the building is making them sick.  The building is 51 years old and some employees of the school have concerns over mold and claim they have sensitive respiratory systems.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Good indoor air quality (IAQ) in schools is a critical component of a healthy and comfortable learning environment. IAQ affects the health, productivity, performance, and comfort of students, teachers and staff.”

Unfortunately, many school districts across Illinois and the nation have witnessed their budgets for preventive maintenance and repairs diminish in recent years due to shrinking budgets.  Aging school facilities, like the half century old school in Deerfield, require regular preventive maintenance to keep the aging structures working properly.

One Illinois company that has worked tirelessly to help schools identify and resolve IAQ issues is EC2, Inc.  “If there is poor IAQ in a school, students and staff may suffer from common symptoms of respiratory infections and allergic or other adverse health reactions, including asthma,” reported Ed Chambers, President of EC2. “Plumbing leaks, leaky roofs, issues with heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems are just a few of the reasons a school may suffer from IAQ problems.  Basic issues like insufficient cleaning or excessive use of toxic cleaning chemicals are also sometimes found to be the culprits.  At times the root cause of the problem can be readily evident, other times it takes extensive investigation and testing.  Many times complaints may even be due to a combination of problems that may only affect a small percentage of students or faculty,” he continued.

EC2 has sponsored an educational video about indoor air quality and schools that can be seen at:
