Transition Hastings-on-Hudson Becomes US' 116th Official Transition Initiative

June 20, 2012 - PRLog -- Transition US is excited to announce that Transition Hastings-on-Hudson has become the 116th official Transition Initiative in the United States. Transition Initiatives start when a small collection of motivated individuals within a community come together with a shared concern: how can our community respond to the challenges and opportunities of peak oil, climate change and the economic crisis? This small team of people begins by forming an initiating group and then adopts the Transition Model with the intention of engaging a significant proportion of the people in their community to kick off a Transition Initiative.

Members of Transition Hastings-on-Hudson's Initiating Group shared that what excites them most about this milestone is "being a part of the mutually supportive global community of the Transition Network as we pursue our vision. Transition Hastings-on-Hudson seeks to nurture the heart of community through cooperation, caring and compassion, and in so doing to discover and create local abundance. We aim to simplify our daily lives in Hastings by fostering interdependence and cooperative sharing with each other and with our environment."

"In the process of creating our initiative we have posted a website, planted gardens, joined a team of residents who are conducting a village-wide tree inventory and signed up to remove invasive vines from trees. We have participated in a steady diet of workshops that teach skills off the grid, and some of us have begun to barter services and goods. We have also begun to meet with individuals and groups in our village, (including members of the village Comprehensive Plan committee) to quietly build on our mutual desire to make Hastings-on-Hudson more resilient. Our goal for the coming year is to expand the radius of all these efforts."

Transition US is a nonprofit organization that provides inspiration, encouragement, support, networking, and training for Transition Initiatives across the United States. They are working in close partnership with the Transition Network, a UK based organization that supports the international Transition Movement as a whole. The Transition Movement is a vibrant, grassroots movement that seeks to build community resilience in the face of such challenges as peak oil, climate change and the economic crisis. It represents one of the most promising ways of engaging people in strengthening their communities against the effects of these challenges, resulting in a life that is more abundant, fulfilling, equitable and socially connected.
