July 2, 2012 - PRLog -- The announcement today by The Times Higher Education that the University of Wollongong (UOW) has been selected as one of the world’s top 100 universities for universities aged under 50 comes as no surprise to former Australian cricketing captain and current UOW Ambassador, Adam Gilchrist.
The Times Higher Education (THE) 100 Under 50 is a new addition to its World University Rankings portfolio. The results and analysis have been published online by THE and as a special supplement to its magazine. The University of Wollongong was listed in 33rd place.
The THE analysis is focused on a new breed of global universities rather than the ancient institutions. THE says the new ranking group looks at universities which have managed to join the world’s top table in a matter of years, not centuries, and others showing great promise.
The THE 100 Under 50 draws on the same comprehensive range of 13 performance indicators used to compile the THE World University Rankings but only ranks those founded in 1962 or later. The University of Wollongong became an independent university in 1975. THE says the new rankings portfolio will give a unique insight into the future Harvard and Cambridge universities.
Adam Gilchrist may have retired from Test cricket, but the champion wicketkeeper-batsman is still going in to bat for Wollongong. He has been involved in trips to India as an ambassador for the University of Wollongong and its Innovation Campus. He has been helping to promote opportunities for Indian companies to establish Australian operations in Wollongong at the Innovation Campus.
“They are looking to Wollongong because the University can offer a steady source of well-trained graduates, research and development partnerships and a modern campus environment. And it’s so pleasing to see such a dynamic university now being listed in the top 100 universities for those aged under 50,” Adam said.
“I have been spruiking the benefits of UOW for several years now as its Ambassador and I am delighted  about the Times Higher Education’s latest recognition of Wollongong’s achievements and potential.”
UOW Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings said today’s announcement was an endorsement of UOW as a research intensive university with a strong commitment to its students and community.
“We already have an enviable record of achievement reflected in UOW’s position in the top 2 per cent of universities worldwide and now we have another prestigious ranking from the Times Higher Education.”
