AMBASSADOR ANDREW YOUNG, CIVIL RIGHTS ICON AND CONFIDANTE OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR., TO SPEAK AT MLK FREEDOM CENTER’S  “BARABARA LEE AND ELIHU HARRIS LECTURE SERIES” OCTOBER 20TH AT OAKLAND MARRIOTT HOTEL

In lecture “The Time Is Now: Our Legacy, Our Future” Ambassador Young will address the trend by some in the U.S. to turn back the clock on voting rights, the relevancy today of the civil rights era and recent incidents at U.S. embassies in the Middle East.  

Who:   Ambassador Andrew Young, U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Former Oakland Mayor Elihu Harris, Roy D. Wilson, Executive Director, Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center, community leaders and the public.

What:   Kick off of the 2012-2013 Barbara Lee and Elihu Harris Lecture Series co-produced by The Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center and Merritt College featuring Ambassador Andrew Young, founding principal and chair of GoodWorks International, an organization that facilitates economic development in the Caribbean and Africa.  Young, a top aide to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has served as Mayor of Atlanta for two terms, a U.S. Congressman and Ambassador to the United Nations.  The event is free to the public.

Why:   Ambassador Young is one of the few remaining leaders of the Civil Rights Movement that served with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and still works in the arena of civil liberties and humanitarian service.  His philosophy as demonstrated by his life’s work is in alignment with the purpose of the Martin Luther King Freedom Center, which creates ethical leadership for personal and social responsibility through education.
