Follow on Google News | McGill Launches 'Made Locally' Consumer Education ProgramCompost manufacturers source raw materials locally and sell products to local markets, creating jobs that can't be outsourced. McGill has developed a new marketing logo to help consumers identify the "local" choice when considering soil products.
"In the composting business, everything is local," says Sean Fallon, McGill account manager. "Most of the raw materials for our products come from generators less than 100 miles from one of our manufacturing plants. We hire local people to staff our facilities, and these are jobs that will never be outsourced, because waste management is a local activity. Then, the compost is sold for beneficial use in the same region. McGill compost is definitely a local product, no matter how you look at it." Gary Gittere, McGill's product sales and marketing manager, agrees. "Consumers are beginning to understand the importance of choosing locally-manufactured products to create and protect local jobs and keep local economies vibrant. We created a logo for our bagged products to help customers 'buy local' from the vast array of soil products offered at the neighborhood lawn and garden center, some of which have traveled hundreds and hundreds of miles before finding a spot on the retail shelf." As the company prepares for the spring 2013 selling season, the new logo, created for the company by SkyBound Designs of Raleigh, will begin to make its appearance on sales collateral, a new one cubic foot SoilBuilder bag, and a dedicated webpage. "Every square inch of space on a printed bag or brochure is prime real estate, and we wouldn't dedicate a spot for the 'Made Locally' logo if it wasn't important for both the local economy and the environment," About McGill Founded in 1991, McGill is credited with pioneering indoor, industrial-scale composting as a revenue-producing service and recycling technology for mainstream waste management. It provides recycling services to more than 200 volume generators in the public and private sectors, currently manufacturing about 400,000 cubic yards of compost products annually. Since 1991, it has recycled over 4 million tons of biodegradable by-products and residuals for beneficial reuse as soil amendments.
