For over 60 years The YMCA’s Youth in Government has been bridging the gap between, well youth and their government.  This premiere extracurricular program enhances civic understanding in a tangible, memorable way for students from 7th to 12th grade, through a hands-on, mock legislative session- the only program of its kind which allows students unprecedented access to the State Capitol Building for three full days for a General Assembly.  Every year 150-250 students congregate (with the aid of actual legislative employees) to draft their own bills, debate with each other, in committees, on the floor of the House of Representatives, and within the Senate Chambers.  The myriad influences of all key players in our modern process are included:  students take the roles of legislators, Supreme Court justices, even lobbyists and the press  corps!  Five exemplary students assume the prestigious roles of Speaker of the House, President of the Senate, State Attorney General, Lt. Governor, and Governor. Together, all are compelled to hone their writing and debate skills to cooperate, compromise, and accomplish their goals.

“Democracy must be learned by every generation,” reads the creed of the Youth in Government Program.  The YIG experience undeniably gives students a unique insight into the inner machinations of our modern government but, perhaps more invaluable are the senses of empowerment, confidence, and newfound passion for our Democratic system and their ability to shape their own generations’ future.

Participants DO NOT need to be a part of a school delegation and is open to all students. Cost for the program is $75 and includes all materials each student will need, as well as cost associated with running the program. As with all programs through the Denver YMCA, scholarships are available to defray the cost for some participants.
