Adventure, Action and plenty of Scateboarding in new book for teens

New author M R Weston looks at bullying in her new fantasy novel for teens, Shadowscape – The Stevie Vegas Chronicles from the viewpoint of a 12 year old skateboarder who makes it his mission to stand up to the town bullies.

Nov. 1, 2012 - PRLog -- ABOUT THE BOOK
Set in a fantasy backdrop with adventure, magic and Extra Sensory Perception, the young adult novel is targeted at kids from 10 through to about 14 years of age.

Author Maryann Weston who lives in country NSW wrote the book for her three teenage boys, including one who has a love of skateboarding.

“I entered their world and the result is a real page turner that’s relevant and a good read for teens. And yes, there is plenty of skateboarding action combined with adventure, action and magic,” she says.

“There is also a strong anti-bullying message that runs through the book. When bullying happens it’s heartbreaking for a parent and you are at a loss to know how to control it, particularly when it happens over Facebook or involves large numbers of school kids where the word has spread that your child is ‘fair game’,” she says.

“The book’s message is that it’s important to take control of the situation, but more importantly to teach your child strategies to deal with bullies because bullies thrive on taking power away from individuals.”

Shadowscape is the first in a magical trilogy and explores the world of Shadowcasters (those with evil intent) and Illuminators (those that bring light to darkness). It’s also about the choices we make and drawing on courage in adversity – standing up for what’s right.

Individuality is another strong theme in the novel. The book’s central character Stevie doesn’t play traditional sports like rugby and soccer, but hones his skills on a skateboard instead.

“Whether you are a skateboarder or BMX rider, the degree of skill and athleticism involved is just as high as someone who is making a lightening burst on the football field. My book celebrates differences and its central hero is definitely not your average boy,” Maryann says.
