Dec. 10, 2012 - PRLog -- Schools, businesses and homes can suffer water damage due to heavy rains, flooding and plumbing problems.  Every day across the Chicago area, people discover water damage and are faced with tackling the issue themselves or calling a restoration company to help remove the water and moisture.

Often, people dealing with a water incursion don’t realize it can create an indoor environment that could be hazardous to people in the building.  Depending on the water source, it may contain bacteria, viruses, mold, chemicals, and even protozoa.    Even water damage due to clean water, known as Category 1 Water, can result in mold growth in as short as 24 hours.

Category 2 Water, also known as Grey Water, typically contains a significant amount of biological or physical contaminants that can cause sickness when humans are exposed or if it is accidently consumed.  Examples include toilet water with no feces, sump pump failures, and water discharged from a dishwashers or washing machine. Category 2 Water, that is not promptly removed or has remained stagnant for 48–72 hours, may at times be reclassified as Category 3 Water.

Category 3 Water, also known as Black Water, is grossly contaminated. It may contain harmful pathogens, microbes, and chemicals that could cause illness. Sources include sewage, rising water from rivers or streams, ground surface water or standing water.

One company that has been helping people deal with water damaged structures across the greater Chicago area and throughout the Midwest is EC2, Inc.  Ed Chambers, President of EC2 shared the following, “Not only can water damaged properties contain microbial hazards that can make people sick, but also many older properties contain asbestos and lead-based paints.  If people attempt to dry these properties incorrectly, these contaminants can become airborne and even spread into areas not damaged by the initial water incursion.  EC2 helps people in these situations by offering consulting and testing services to ensure building occupants are safe and that the structure is properly dried.”

EC2 has sponsored a video about potential hazards people may face when attempting to dry out a water damaged building.  It can be seen at:
