Dec. 13, 2012 - PRLog -- Hollywood-Nashville-New York -- Lead singer for the Smokey River Boys, producer Robert Metzgar announced today the group’s nomination for Group Of The Year at the 2013 New Music Weekly awards show.  The single shipped in compilation with Carrie Underwood’s new release to radio stations all over the world on December 6th. *See http://www.smokeyriverboys.com

Metzgar, who was born in Fairfield, Texas credits his upbringing in the farming community where his dad was a converted bootlegger and his mom was a school teacher with his success.  “My dad was converted in a one room school house revival in Fairfield, Texas under the preaching of Robert Hankins years ago and I grew up in a home where my mom sang and wrote these wonderful  hymns.  I learned to play the guitar from my dad who was an incredible banjo and guitar player.  I learned to write songs from my mother who had her early work published by Broadman Press in Nashville when she was growing up at Buckner’s Orphanage in Dallas, Texas.”  * See http://www.janiemetzgar.com

Our current single entitled “All Pure Country” is a story about my early life as a minister in Plainview, Texas.  I had a couple there that influenced my life quite a bit and the song tells the story of Rex & Wanda Davey who were harvesters in the Plainview community.  I reached back and used a lot of what I learned growing up in Fairfield, Texas to finish the song.  My grandparents came to Freestone County as immigrants from Hamburg, Germany and my great grand father was born on the ship coming to America that went through Boston harbor and later they moved to farm that black land dirt in Fairfield.

I owe a great deal to my heritage as a musician and songwriter and when I was a little boy used to lay awake on the floor of my Aunt Cindy DeFrance’s home on the way to Palestine, Texas and dream about moving to Nashville and writing songs for a living.  I never thought that would come to pass but it did and now that’s the way I’ve made my living here for the past 35 years.  I went back to Fairfield to fish on the lake there with my dad, play golf on the golf course and see my grandparents old homestead farm.
I was shocked to see so many white tail deer just as tame as they could be come right up to us and eat right out of our hands.  I still think the Lord blessed Fairfield and the people who live there with the most beautiful land on this earth.

Our group has done 3 albums for Time Life Warner, 3 albums for MCA Universal and now we are working on new music with Platinum Plus International.  I was lucky in a wonderful sort of way to get to do what I loved my entire life.  My little brother Paul fell out of the boat that my dad and I were fishing in on Burleson Lake one night.  He was just a small child and was sitting on the bow of the boat when the boat hit a stump in the lake.  He fell out of the boat and all I remember was I dived in to save him when his head went under the water.  In that cold black water I prayed like I’ve never prayed in all my life.  Somehow I managed to grab hold of his shirt down in that deep water in the middle of the lake we were crossing before daylight.  *See http://www.capitolmanagement.com

I remember him saying when we broke the top of the water, “What took you so long?  You know I can’t swim.”  Somehow the good Lord wanted us to survive that horrible incident and we went back to the dock to dry off.  While he was shivering trying to get dry I thought about how good God is to us.  I have never stopped thanking the Lord for the opportunities he has given me in this life.  And, I always thank the Lord for my older brother Billy Jack teaching me how to swim at an early age.  My mom and dad are buried in Fairfield along with many members of our family, including my little sister Janie who died of Spinal Meningitis and I will always be thankful to the upbringing I had in East Texas.  My dad pastored the First Assembly of God church there in Fairfield and you always thank God for your roots.  If our group is elected “Group Of The Year” at this big pop awards show, when I walk down the red carpet out there in Los Angeles, I ‘ll be thinking about Fairfield, Texas and all the wonderful sweet people there. *See http://www.newmusicweekly.com

I am thankful to our fans and the people around the world that have bought our music and voted us into the Legends Hall Of Fame and also the West Texas Music Hall Of Fame.  Our album from the “O Brother” movie is the biggest seller of our lifetime and we always think of Fairfield when we sing the big hit on that record “Man Of Constant Sorrow.”
