IIM admission: How 13 IIMs differ on short listing, final selection criteria

Jan. 15, 2013 - PRLog -- Soon after the CAT 2012 results were announced on January 9, MBAUniverse.com published three in-depth and analytical articles on short listing and final selection criteria of all the 13 IIMs. This article offers you a snapshot of the key points of our analysis on the admission process and selection criteria of the IIMs.

Short listing parameters: These parameters include CAT 2012 scores, academic performance, work experience and diversity factors. Weightage given to each of these criteria varies between IIMs.

Selection criteria at a glance

Institute name: IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Calcutta, IIM Bangalore, IIM Lucknow

Key characteristics: - IIM A gives 70% weightage on CAT score. IIM C provides 77% weightage while IIM L allots 76% out of 100. However, IIM B provides a meager 20% weightage to CAT score.

- IIM C provides 3% weightage for gender diversity factor while IIM L provides 10% to both gender and academic diversity

IIM B lays maximum emphasis on work experience (10%) among the top four. IIM C gives 8%, IIM L gives 4% while IIM A only gives 3% weightage.

- IIM C provides 10% weightage to WAT, IIM B gives 15%, IIM L gives 20% (out of 100). IIM A gives no weightage to WAT.

Institute name: IIM Indore, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Shillong

Key characteristics:  - IIM Indore gives no weightage to CAT score in short listing. It emphasizes on past academic performance

- IIM Kozhikode provides 5% weightage on gender diversity (for women)

- During the final round, IIM Indore provides 50% for past academic performances while IIM Kozhikode gives 20%. IIM Shillong allots no such weightage.

- IIM Indore gives 15% weightage to WAT and IIM Kozhikode provides 20%. However IIM Shillong does not provide any weightage to WAT, instead it allots 15% to GD.

Institute name: IIM Raipur, IIM Ranchi, IIM Kashipur, IIM Rohtak, IIM Udaipur, IIM Trichy

Key characteristics: -IIM Rohtak & IIM Trichy will short list candidates based on CAT scores and past academic experience while IIM U, IIM Raipur uses only CAT score for short listing.

- For final selection, while IIM K gives 42% weightage to CAT score in final selection, IIM Ranchi gives only 30 and IIM Raipur gives 40%.

- None of the six IIMs includes GD in their selection process.

- IIM Kashipur includes gender diversity (7%), past academic performance (6%) and work experience (5%) too along with CAT score to short list students.

- IIM Ranchi provides maximum 50% weightage to PI & WAT scores during their final selection, followed by IIM Raipur & Kashipur (40%), IIM Rohtak & Udaipur (30%) and IIM Trichy (32%)

PI assessment process & tools: Personal interview forms a very important role in the final selection. Being an interactive round, PI enables interviewers to have an idea about the thought process, personality and individuality of a candidate. All the IIMs provide high weightage to PI. IIM A provides 70% weightage to PI, while IIM C, IIM B and IIM L provide 44%, 20% and 30%, respectively.

Four out of six new IIMs provide 30% weightage to personal interview in the final selection. However, IIM Udaipur & Trichy provide 20% & 17%, respectively.

Final selection parameters: After short listing, comes the final selection round. The criteria for the final selection are WAT, group discussion and personal interview. In this round also, different IIMs follow different process and parameters.

IIM A provides 70% weightage to personal interview and allots no weightage to WAT and group discussion during final selection. However, WAT is given due 10-20% weightage by IIMs – IIM C (10%), IIM B (15%), IIM L (10%), IIM Indore (15%), IIM Kozhikode (20%), IIM Shillong (10%), IIM Ranchi (20%), IIM Kashipur (10%), IIM Udaipur (10%) and IIM Trichy (15%).
While IIM C provides 8% weightage to work experience in the final round, IIM B lays emphasis on both duration and quality of work experience with a combined weightage of 10%.

Out of the top 7 IIMs, only IIM Lucknow allots weightage to group discussion. However, IIM Shillong does consider a minimum performance criterion (25%) in GD.
