Jan. 17, 2013 - PRLog -- Brass Cannon Books is using the Espresso Book Machine (EBM), a device which prints and binds trade paperback books in a few minutes while the customer watches, to promote Francis Hamit's new thriller MELTDOWN.  The EBM is featured at some large independent bookstores and university libraries in the USA and Canada as a self and small press publishing facility, but it can also print any book distributed in the EspressNet system.  Here is a link to a video clip that demonstrates the machine in action:

Francis Hamit has included a signature and inscription page opposite the title page of his new novel, MELTDOWN, which appears in the EBM edition.  Due to a recent illness he is not doing many personal appearances or events at this time.

"Unlike a regular book signing," he said, "This one will last more than two months rather than two hours, which should give anyone who wants one a chance to get a virtually signed edition.  It should be a real collector's item in the years ahead.  And it fits perfectly with how we publish books now.  We start with the e-book edition and then move to print, but this is the ultimate e-book, because you can hold in your hand and read it without using a device, just like any other print book."

Hamit added, "We think this is the future of publishing.  The EBM is expensive right now, but publishing this way saves a lot of costs of inventory and transportation, and the quality of the final product is identical to the more conventionally printed books we have published.  There will be far less waste.  It's a better solution ecologically because there will also be no remainders.  And we make a profit on every copy we sell.

MELTDOWN,  published last year, is an alternative history thriller about an attack on a nuclear power plant by domestic, so-called "patriot" militia groups.  The plant is defended by an elite force of contract security officers, but has problems with anti-nuclear demonstrators, a new security chief sent to cut costs, and an eccentric lead technician known as "Crazy Jimmy".

Hamit has a background in Military Intelligence and spent 21 years in the Security business.  He is a member of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers and a former member of the American Society for Industrial Security.

"You would think, with all that background, that this would be a risky thing to write about, but I was actually very careful not to include anything that real bad guys could use to attempt something like this.  It's complete fiction, and meant to be an entertainment."
