ple-ia-des (PLEE-uh-dees), plural noun: a cluster of stars, also known as the Seven Sisters in Greek mythology, located in the Taurus (bull) constellation near Orion.

The Five Points area of downtown Durham is alive with great food, wine, cupcakes, spas, and shopping. Now you can add fine art to that mix. Pleiades Gallery leaps onto the scene in April 2013 with outstanding art offerings from a select group of talented and award-winning local jewelers, photographers, sculptors, ceramicists, and painters. Pleiades Gallery welcomes new art appreciators as well as established collectors, and strives to build strong relationships with customers and the broader arts community of Durham.

Located at 109 East Chapel Hill Street, the gallery faces the plaza at Five Points near the Cupcake Bar, Pizzeria Toro, and Beauty and the Bull. The gorgeous, airy gallery space was recently renovated by Center Studio Architecture, who occupies the adjoining location at 107 E. Chapel Hill Street.

Renee Leverty, a sculptor, and Kimberly Wheaton, a painter, are the founders of Pleiades Gallery, LLC. Renee and Kimberly picked the name Pleiades for the gallery as a way to represent Durham. The cluster of seven stars is pictured on the city flag, and Pleiades is located on the shoulder of Taurus, the bull constellation (for the Bull City!).

Pleiades Gallery will have a “soft” opening at the beginning of April and will be one of the host locations for the Durham Art Walk April 13-14. The artists of Pleiades Gallery will hold their inaugural Third Friday reception on April 19, 6-9 pm. Everyone is invited to come meet the artists.
