Follow on Google News | Project Management Methodology: When and How to UsePM methodologies differ through many different aspects, they depend on the client, the type of project and the working capacity of the project team; thus, knowing when and how to use them is vital for a good Project Manager.
By: Project Manager The first known PM methodology was developed by the Project Management Institute (PMI), it is commonly known as the PMI approach. The PMI methodology concentrates on a step by step approach which intertwines all results together to finish the project at once, within a given period. The best example for this methodology is the completion of a building; it is being completed storey per storey but cannot be used until the given completion date. They wanted the certainty of delivery from these vendors and a consistent approach to be used by their vendors, and for that reason the UK government sponsored an initiative which developed the PRINCE2 approach. In many cases, government institutions require a project manager to be certified in PRINCE2, and certainly require the vendors to use a PRINCE2 approach in delivering those projects. The third approach was developed in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s; it was created by Jason Westland who happens to be the president of Project Manager Ltd. This methodology was called Method123, another step by step approach and is best described as a combination of both PMI and PRINCE2 methodologies. The 4th and final methodology was once known as the SCRUM Method, which was used in the the 1960’s which became widely known as the Agile approach as time goes by. This is best described by completing projects by chunks wherein, each completed chunk become temporarily useable for the clients and customers, while the remaining parts are being completed. This Methodology is best used in software development wherein beta versions are created for testing, but the usability is not as complete since the other chunks are still on process. A great PM should be aware and completely capable of using these methodologies so that, in whatever project he faces, he could easily choose which methodology he needs to use, and if capable, he can play around these methodologies and create a tactic of his own.
