Mercedes-Benz Plans to Use Garmin Navigation for All Future Models

Mercedes-Benz announced a major partnership with the Swiss leader in global positioning and navigation systems to develop a fully integrated in-dash system in the next few years. The first fruits of this agreement will probably even reach dealerships in 2014 models.

No real details have been announced about what shoppers can expect from the new systems; Mercedes-Benz and Garmin suggested that detailed would be announced when initial launch vehicles are developed and announced. Garmin said that there would likely be sophisticated features like Advanced Driver Assistance in order to aid in vehicle positioning. Mercedes-Benz will probably integrate their voice command technology and COMAND® dial control system.

The new system is expected to seamlessly integrate data on two screens, one on the center stack and one behind the steering wheel. Important information like the next turn will be displayed on the instrument panel for the driver to see at a quick glance. Garmin’s technology will likely be incorporated into the current COMAND® and mbrace® technologies.

Mercedes-Benz will probably debut the new systems that will incorporate Garmin technology in 2014. Likely the first cars that will see the new system are high-end vehicles like the S-Class Sedan and the G-Class. Improved navigation technology could also appeal to commercial drivers using the Sprinter.
