By: Brighton Press Room It had been over twenty years since Topher, a chronic worrier, had last walked through the hallowed doors of his old high school hangout, the 1950’s styled diner, “Oasis.” Surprisingly, Topher receives a letter inviting him back for one more meeting. Growing up together in Southern California and dreaming of owning classic cars, Topher and his friends, Grant, Stephen, Brandon, and the intrepid teenage girl known as Runaway, become intrigued by the history of street racing that surrounds the diner and its patrons. Soon, the pictures hanging on the walls and the stories told by the owner come to life and stir their teenage appetites to hope for the resurgence of the frenetic quarter-mile races. With thoughts of squealing tires and revved-up engines flashing through her head, Runaway, the visionary of the group, convinces the others to form their own car club, The Shakers. Word quickly gets out as other schools form their own clubs and soon, the groups are racing. Bret, the neighborhood bully, finds out the hard way that his nemesis, Runaway, is impossible to beat on the track. Instead, he opts to pursue more malicious intents by manipulating those closest to Runaway for his own sinister desires. After a terrible accident, Runaway and Bret agree to face-off and settle the score in one final race, but both Bret and Runaway up the stakes with a shocking personal side bet that has overwhelming consequences. Now, decades later, Topher and his friends are forced to confront the memories of that fateful day. “Author Kathleen Cook Huebbe illustrates her firm grasp of the young adult genre as she presents a heart-racing story that is sure to echo throughout high school halls everywhere,” Kathleen Cook Huebbe was born in Southern California, and grew up listening to stories of street racing in the 1950s from her father, a street racer himself. Ms. Huebbe has been a high school English teacher for more than eighteen years and currently resides in Southern California with her husband, their three energetic young children, and Jake, their Golden Retriever. First envisioned as a daydream, Runaway: Their Moment in Time has been in the making for over twenty years. End
