“Help Les” Is Helpful as Hometown Committee Raises Funds For Injured & Disabled Homeless Man to Go Home Again on May 9, 2013

Former San Francisco 49er James “Monk” Johnson rallies committee in Columbus, GA to raise over $17,000 in sixty days to pay for medical air flight for Selester “Les” Rowe, former architectural engineer and musician who was struck last May in a hit and run accident.

What:          It’s the tale of three cities: the people of San Francisco, CA, Columbus, Georgia, and Phenix City, AL working together to make the difference in the life of a man who is a stranger to most who heard of  his story.  He was homeless when struck in a hit and run accident May 2012. The Rowe Family is still seeking information on the driver who has not yet been arrested.

WHY:          The economic crisis is more than statistics about employment rates, stocks and bonds rising and falling, new or stalled housing starts.  It’s about people and what happens to them.  This story of professionally trained 62 year-old, Selester “Les” Rowe (architect & musician-graduate of Tuskegee Institute) gets behind the numbers and shows the human significance of the statistics that so easily flow from the mouths and pens of journalists.  

This is an uplifting story that started out in tragedy, as a professionally trained man who had reportedly been homeless for five years was struck by an SUV in a hit and run accident at the corner of Stockton St. and Columbus Avenue in San Francisco.  The accident on the street named after his hometown Columbus, Georgia begins the journey of recovery for a man, although still bedridden can go home to the waiting arms of his 87 year-old mother days before “Mother’s Day.”  It’s the story of family, friends and strangers coming together to remind us that that milk of human kindness still flows.
