The Council on Black Minnesotans is delighted to invite all Minnesotans of African descent to join in recognizing our history and culture, celebrating our present and shaping our future at the 2013 Power of Unity Summit.

Celebrating communalities and contributions, fostering harmony and growth.

This weekend-long celebration will be centered on the themes: Power of Unity, Power of Communication, and Power of Family. Each day is packed with different activities. Engage with community leaders, be entertained, create a lasting artistic impression, and celebrate with family.

• The Power of Unity, June 28TH 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Noted historians will prepare the community for open reflective discussions of our community history, culture and political realities. Through this inclusive discussion session, you will explore the past and build a fundamental understanding of our experience as African people in the modern world.

• The Power of Communication, June 29th 10:00 am - 4:30 pm

Artists are invited to a morning session where they will discuss ways to build their capacity to sustain cultural traditions though their craft

In the afternoon, the community will be invited to the Summit to engage in meaningful discussion, the Cradle of Spirituality - Creating Family Harmony: Memory of our African spirituality in our current faith traditions. Registrants should be prepared to interact with spiritual leaders and representatives as they discuss and create awareness of the major African faith traditions.

Another afternoon offering will allow children and families to join local artists to create a work of art that expresses our communalities, aspirations, and empowers action.

• The Power of the Family, June 30th 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Congregate with other Minnesota communities of African descent at a fun-filled family picnic on the grounds of the History Center. Enjoy performances by vibrant artists and be visually stimulated by artwork of our local artisans.

There is no fee for the event, but space is limited, so register early. Registration is required.To register, please visit http://councilonblackminnesotans.com.

All summit activities will take place at the MN History Center, located at 345 W. Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55102. Thanks to the generosity of the MN History Center, Summit registered guests will have free access to all history center exhibits including the Rondo Neighborhood and other exhibits highlighting African people in MN.

This work is funded in part with money from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund that was created with the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008. The Council on Black Minnesotans received a Minnesota Legacy grant in partnership with the Minnesota Humanities Center to coordinate a 2013 Minnesotans of African Descent Cultural Relations Summit. These activities align with the Council’s mission to advocate for the interests of all Minnesotans of African Descent.
