Danbury, CT - On May 4th 2013, the North American Grappling Association( First to compete in the No-Gi portion of the tourney for the Fishkill Martial Arts school was student Brian Boersma, who set the tone for the medaling filled afternoon. The former high-school standout and East Fishkill resident displayed nothing but determination and skill on his way to racking up multiple victories to earn a spot in the No-Gi Welterweight Division finals. Once in the finals, Brian continued his winning ways by submitting his opponent (via Guillotine) to earn the Gold Medal and be crowned champion. The lifelong, decorated grappler is no slouch when it comes to the mats. Having wrestled for varsity at the age of 12, Brian is a 6x All County, 2 x Divison, 2 x All Section and 2X NHSCA All-American wrestler with an outstanding 150 wins in High School. Following Boersma’s success, teammate Sean “Simba” Deleon a Danbury resident, and student of the Fishkill Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy would next step onto the mats. Competing in the No-Gi Light-Heavyweight Division the 3 month practitioner fought with tremendous valiance on his way to a Bronze Medal medal. The Dutchess County Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school’s next student to step on the mats was 24 year old Bantamweight, Keith McMillen. The Lagrange resident recently enrolled at the Fishkill BJJ school with the desire to compete and that he did. The 6th month practitioner got his afternoon jump started by taking 3rd place in 130lb No-Gi division. With Keith’s medal winning performance, Evo BJJ was now 3-3 with 3 competitors bringing home 3 medals. With the No-Gi Submission Wrestling portion of the event coming to a close, the second half of the day was set to begin. As Gi divisions were moments away from beginning, the Evolution Jiu Jitsu grapplers suited up and stretched out. Up first again for the Fishkill BJJ school was Brian Boersma. Who put forth another display of great effort placing 3rd after losing by points in the Semi-Finals. Boersma’s day would end there with a Gold Medal in No-Gi and a Bronze in Gi. When Sean “Simba” Deleon stepped back onto the mats, he used his superior technique to submit all of his opponents as he made his way to the Finals of the White Belt Light-Heavyweight Division. Deleon would go on to earn the Silver Medal after coming up short in a hard-fought battle to the eventual champion in the Finals. “Simba” Deleon would take home the Silver & Bronze Medals for his efforts. Keith McMillen’s day of success would continue as well after taking 2nd place in the Gi finals, being the 3RD Student of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Fishkill, NY to make it to the Championship round. Going up last for Evolution Jiu Jitsu was Head Instructor, Coach Mike Palladino . A Fishkill, NY resident, Mike Palladino took home the Bronze Medal in the Brown Belt Welterweight Division, losing via points in the Semi-Finals in a high-paced, technical, back-and-forth thriller. Other honorable mentions are students Korie Roberts and Yefferson Garibello. Korie who although did not place, showed effort, courage, skill and promise in losing to the eventual champion. Garibello, would go onto the semi-finals, ultimately losing his 3rd place consolation match in a war of attrition. With six competitors taking home seven medals from it’s first tournament, Evolution BJJ is beginning it’s ascension. The students are eager to compete at the next U.S. Nationals tournament by Grappler’s Quest on July,20 2013 in Morristown, NJ. When asked about what led to the success displayed by the students of the Fishkill Martial Arts school at the NAGA tournament, Evolution Jiu Jitsu Head Coach Mike Palladino stated “The work ethic, comradery and the motivation to train.
