The books follow the adventures of former CIA officer, Bill Boyle, and his lover, Eleni Paraskevi, a former member of a Greek terrorist group. The name "Caffa" is derived from the name of the Crimean city attacked by Muslim forces in the first known use of biological warfare. The Muslim army, decimated by the plague, resorted to catapaulting the bodies of their dead over the walls of the city in an attempt to spread the pestilence inside.
