College Athletes

Here’s some surprising information about college students drinking and driving: College athletes are the heaviest drinkers in the entire school. Fifty-two percent of the men and forty-eight percent of the women athletes are binge drinkers. They often fall prey to alcohol-related injuries and other harms due to their over-indulgences. The athletes are also most likely to cite getting drunk as a good reason to drink. Some of them are so inebriated most of the time that they are removed from the teams they play on until they can sober up.

Women Students

According to the Core Institute’s study of college students drinking and driving, female college students drink on average only four drinks per week, rather than the 9 drinks males have. Overall, 35% of women students state that their alcohol usage has remained steady over the past years, but 22% said that their consumption has increased during that same time period.

Eight-eight percent of Greek students believe that wine, beer, and liquor are vital to fraternity and sorority social activities, and while 86%of Greek students have had a drink in the past 30 days, 93% of them admit to having increased their overall consumption of alcohol.

Freshmen Students and Alcohol

Many freshmen don’t drink alcohol at first, and so did not have any in the month before the survey. However, that doesn’t mean that they couldn’t change their minds later in the year, and they did. Freshmen college students drinking and driving incidents rose somewhat during the first year at college. Just to be clear, 67% of freshmen admitted to drinking prior to taking the survey and 8 of 10 say they drank within the past year. It’s hard to make out any conclusion about college drinking and driving because while the numbers go down in some cases, they come up in others.
