BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Aug. 23, 2013 - PRLog -- Best selling author and Great Lakes expert Loreen Niewenhuis is undertaking her third Great Lakes adventure. This time, she will explore many of the islands of the Great Lakes.
"It's perfect timing to have the bicentennial of the Battle of Lake Erie happen when I am on my Great Lakes Island Adventure," Niewenhuis said. "I get to explore the Lake Erie Islands and then board one of the ships for the reenactment of the historic battle that took place during the War of 1812."
Each reenactor chooses a person who actually fought in the battle and stands in for him. "I will be Josiah Briggs for the battle," Niewenhuis said. "He was an American private who served on the schooner Scorpion. This ship fired the first and last shot in the battle. I can't wait to board the ship and conquer the British!"
The Battle of Lake Erie was the first time the British Navy lost a battle and had their entire squadron captured. Commodore Perry wrote the famous line "We have met the enemy and they are ours" to tell his superiors of the victory.
Niewenhuis will explore many of the islands in all five Great Lakes on her current adventure. The book about her journey will be called A 1,000-Mile Great Lakes Island Adventure and will be released in 2015.
Niewenhuis walked all the way around Lake Michigan in 2009. Then, she wrote the best-selling book, A 1000-MILE WALK ON THE BEACH, released in 2011.
In 2012, she undertook another 1000-mile hike -- this time touching all five Great Lakes -- and her latest book, A 1000-MILE GREAT LAKES WALK was released first to select indie bookstores in April 2013, then nationwide in June. Both books were published by Crickhollow Books of Milwaukee. Her second book was recently awarded the Great Lakes Great Reads designation by the Great Lakes Independent Booksellers Association.
