Kleinfelder Project Receives National Project Award from the Design-Build Institute of A

Armed Forces Reserve Center in Middleton, Connecticut constitutes “design-build” done right

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Dec. 30, 2013 - PRLog -- A model for sustainable design and technology implementation, the $51 million Major General Maurice Rose Armed Forces Reserve Center in Middletown, Connecticut, has received the New England Design-Build Award from the Design-Build Institute of America. Kleinfelder and KBE Building Corp. along with DeRita Construction provided design, procurement and construction services on the project. Despite the complexities, the project was completed in less than two years and received LEED Gold certification.

To support the U.S. Army Reserve and Connecticut Army National Guard citizen soldier readiness training,  the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) commission requested a fast-track plan to design and build a new sustainable training facility. Kleinfelder’ solution consisted of a four-story facility with  energy-efficient classrooms, administration offices, storage facilities and a vehicle maintenance shop. Since it opened, the LEED Gold certified structure has reduced water and energy use by 30 and 50 percent, respectively, and is projected to save over 1,336,320 pounds of CO2 over the next 30 years.

“This winning project exemplifies Kleinfelder’s  commitment to sustainability, teamwork, innovation and communication,” said Robert Brandon, the company’s vice president of major accounts. “This project is a great example of what can be accomplished through effective collaboration in design-build delivery.”

The project was honored during the Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner on December 11 in Framingham, Massachusetts. To be considered for the Design-Build award, projects had to demonstrate the application of design-build best practices as defined by DBIA’s Design-Build Manual of Practice. The Armed Forces Reserve Center was selected for its advanced and innovative project delivery, in addition to achieving budget and schedule goals.
