Follow on Google News | Dog Kingdom Pets Puppy Mill Rescue Achieves Therapy Dog CertificationTotal rehabilitation of a fearful dog, using only force free and humane training methods is possible. In fact force free is the only method used by Dog Kingdom Pets in all animal interactions.
By: Dog Kingdom Pets Leslie Clifton volunteers as an active Therapy Team for non-profit www.pawsforpeople.org with American Lab Bridget, visiting Union Hospital in Elkton MD. Clifton recently decided her rescued lab Doobie was ready for the Therapy STEX (Standards of Excellence) testing. Doobie was one of fifty -four Labrador Retrievers rescued from a West Virginia puppy mill four years ago. Leslie Clifton embarked upon a long term committment to adopt and undergo rehabilitation of a dog who knew only of life on a puppy mill. Clifton has delightedly observed, over the last four years, the transformation from terrified by life in general, to a confident outgoing and happy Therapy Dog. This was no small undertaking. Positive reinforcement training can completely change a fearful dog. The training methods of Dog Kingdom Pets are force free, humane and based exclusively on positive reinforcement and empowerment training. Doobie received the extensive rehabilitation he needed to overcome his many fears. The transition took time, not weeks, or months, but, years, as Doobie learned trust in the dog-human relationship, learned play, learned new behaviors and to enjoy life. Doobie learned how to be a dog. The transition took painstaking training of new behaviors in small incremental steps. Clifton, recognizing her lab was ready, contacted PAWS to have Doobie tested. He passed with flying colors. On the same day, Doobie also tested for Canine Good Citizen and achieved double distinctions. Leslie Clifton is elated that a second Dog Kingdom Pets lab will provide Pet Therapy. Leslie Clifton looks forward to carrying on the mission of Dog Kingdom Pets, proving the effectiveness of force free training, and educating against force based methods of training. Therapy Dog Doobie will set an excellent precedent for positive training everywhere as he engages people with his soulful brown eyes and sweet dispostion. Clifton recognizes complete rehabilitation of Doobie would not have occured with the use of punishing training methods and in fact that punishment would have ruined this now transformed dog. Leslie Clifton is proud of her role in promoting force free training and a better life for pets. The most important thing to recognize about Leslie Clifton is that her dog training, pet sitting and pet supply business is a natural extension of her personal and professional philosophy.
