Follow on Google News | EU Releases the Authorized List of Smoke Flavoring Primary Products for FoodsRegulation (EU) No 1321/2013 (1) was published on 10 December 2013 establishing the list of the smoke flavoring primary products authorized to the exclusion of all others in the European Union (EU) for use in or on foods.
By: SGS SA - Consumer Testing Services Smokes flavoring primary products are produced from smoke which is purified to produce these flavorings. They are regulated separately from other flavorings as they consist of complex mixtures of substances derived from specific processes to obtain this type of flavor. Conditions of the production are controlled including maximum levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which give rise to different safety issues. The use of smoke flavorings is considered a lower health concern than the traditional smoking process. Regulation European Commission (EC) No 2065/2003 (2) lays down the procedure for the evaluation and authorization of smoke flavoring primary products. The Authority has evaluated only 11 of 14 primary products that were considered as valid applications. Moreover each authorization may be subject for evaluation of specific conditions of use. Ten evaluated applications have been authorized after completion of the evaluation. The regulation authorization should be valid throughout the Community for 10 years and should be renewable for 10 years period on application to the Commission by the authorization holder, at latest 18 months before the expiry date of the authorization. Specific Conditions of Use for Smoke Flavorings The list of the smoke flavoring primary products authorized to the exclusion of all others in the Union for use in or on foods or for the production of derived smoke flavorings, as referred to in Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 2065/2003, is laid down in the Annex to the Regulation (EU) No 1321/2013. The authorized ten smoke flavoring primary products that can be used in food and each authorized primary product should provide a unique product code, the name of the product, the name and address of the authorization holder, a description and characterization of the product, the conditions of its use including maximum levels in or on specific foods or food categories, the date from which the product is authorized and the date until which the product is authorized. The purpose of this Regulation should be referred to the food categories as laid down in Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 (3) on food additive. The list of the authorized smoke flavorings took effect from 1 January 2014.
