African Woman Foundation Launches Women Centered Care Project

Using research and technology to serve the women of Magu, Tanzania

April 2, 2014 - PRLog -- Magu, Tanzania: On March 31, 2014, The African Woman Foundation (AWF) and the African Woman Alliance (AWA) alongside local partners CROMABU and the District of Magu launched the “Woman Centered Care Project” (WCCP) in  Tanzania to work towards preventing maternal and infant mortality. The needs in area have been thoroughly researched by the partners and all are pleased to formally launch the initiative.

WCCP is facilitating 80 community groups throughout the area to empower communities to demand quality care and to identify context specific solutions. At the same time, AWF is working with health care dispensaries to meet their basic needs. AWF has developed an Android application named the Nurse Assistant App to be used on a Samsung tablet that is intended to help the healthcare providers record the mother’s information and give the healthcare provider tips and medical advice for reference aiming to improve the quality of care provided to pregnant mothers.

Project founder and university professor, Dr. Peter Kenemans commented ‘The pregnant women of Africa deserve better care and more information.’ Andrea Solnes Miltenburg, the Project Coordinator shared her view that, ‘We should stop treating women and communities as if they are ignorant, they are well aware of their problems and with some help are able to identify potential solutions as well. We should strengthen their capabilities. Community groups offer a platform for that.’ Project Manager and CROMABU Director, Naomi Maselle added ‘It is the community that matters most, and women are the backbones of the community.’ With two hundred community members present, Magu district and the community showed full support of the project. One Launch participant named Edna Matasha from the local non-governmental organization, Enhancing Access to Health for Poverty Reduction (EAHP) said ‘This is a wonderful initiative. We need to do more like this project.”
