ASHEVILLE, N.C. - April 3, 2014 - PRLog -- In celebration of National Poetry Month, Mayor William “Bill” Moore of Fletcher, North Carolina issued an official Mayoral Proclamation for the Town of Fletcher. Mayor Moore joined several mayors in cities and towns throughout North Carolina to recognize the month of April as National Poetry Month. His objective is to focus on observing the cultural riches of his community, by recognizing the important roll poetry plays, as an essential part of the arts and humanities.

The Academy of American Poets inaugurated National Poetry Month in 1996, which is celebrated every April. Schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers and poets throughout the United States band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. Individuals and organizations participate through readings, festivals, book displays, workshops and other poetry-related events to commemorate a genre that is reviving itself as a viable contributor to the development of creativity, awareness and education around the country.

The Town of Fletcher is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, approximately thirteen miles south of Asheville. The town is located near the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. Carl Sandburg, known as the “Poet of the People,” was a writer, poet, historian biographer of Abraham Lincoln and social activist. A virtual multi-media exhibit celebrates Sandburg by highlighting the last twenty-two years of his life through personal belongings, awards, photographs and his writings. In an area steeped with poetic culture, Mayor Moore graciously consented to issue his Mayoral Proclamation, from a request submitted by North Carolina poet, Kym Gordon Moore.
