DELHI, India - May 6, 2014 - PRLog -- Even as India was implementing a modest plan to secure its coastline and maritime boundaries against terror attacks, the audacious Mumbai terror attacks of November 2008 brought the sheer vulnerability of the nation's long coast line, into sharp focus.  As a consequence of the 26/11 outrage, the totality of the coastal security scenario was thoroughly reviewed by the Government and National Committee on Strengthening Maritime and Coastal Security (NCSMCS) was constituted under the chairmanship of the Cabinet Secretary.

Just last year, on 14 August 2014, the Indian Navy suffered a blow in the form of a devastating fire in one of its Kilo-class submarines, INS Sinshurakshak, which completely gutted it. The cause has still not been established.

The first Maritime & Coastal Security Conference & Exhbition was held at Mumbai in the Western Naval Command facilities in October 2013 in the back drop of the Sindhurakshak incident.

A few months later, an accident, belived to be sabotage on board another Kilo-class submarine, INS Sindhughosh, caused the death of two officers.

The second phase of the Coastal Security Scheme is under implementation in India.
