Julie & Julia Author to Visit Long Island Senior Living Community

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. - May 28, 2014 - PRLog -- PORT WASHINGTON, New York – Trapped in a tiny apartment with little idea of where her life was going, Julie Powell embarked on a journey with a good friend who was a few years and many recipes away. Between frying an egg for the first time and butchering beef bourguignon, Powell discovered herself with the help of Julia Child. Powell, the bestselling author of Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously, will discuss her famous memoirs with Long Island seniors during two separate events at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, at The Amsterdam at Harborside senior living community, located at 300 E. Overlook in Port Washington.

Julie & Julia began when Powell was nearing 30 years old and working at an unfulfilling secretarial job. She resolved to cook all 524 recipes from Julia Child’s legendary Master the Art of French Cooking in just one year, and chronicled the journey in a personal blog. After she gained a vast online following, she eventually developed her blog into the book, which was published in 2005.

The memoir was adapted into a 2009 feature film starting Amy Adams and Meryl Streep, sharing her story with an even larger audience. The film went on to be honored with numerous award nominations and wins, including an Academy Award nomination for Meryl Streep. Powell’s second memoir, Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat and Obsession, was published in 2009.

In addition to her books and blog, Powell’s writing has appeared in many periodicals, including The New York Times, House Beautiful, Food & Wine and Bon Appétit.
