The new musuem is located inside the famous Shuvalov Palace on the Fontanka river, in the heart of St Petersburg. The museum contains the world's largest collection of items from the Faberge family including the world's largest collection of Faberge Eggs. The official opening of the Faberge Museum took place on November 19, 2013 with a 4,700 square meter area opened inside the palace. The idea for the Faberge Museum comes from Viktor Vekselberg with the goal of repatriating Russian cultural items. The famous Imperial Easter Eggs are considered historical monuments by Russia and many are from the reign of Tsar Alexander III and Nicholas II. Very often the Faberge house presented the Tsar the famous eggs during Orthodox Easter celebrations. Julia Ivanushkina, the owner of Dancing Bear Tours comments "While many people come to see the Faberge Eggs, they are surprised to see all the other masterpieces created by the House of Faberge." Besides the Imperial eggs, visitors can find other works-of-art from the House of Faberge including silverware, jewelyr, religious icons, and other famous works from Russian jewelers and silversmiths. Many of the works on display belonged to the royal family and other members of the monarchist courts of Europe and were carefully collected and brought to Russia for display in this museum. The Faberge Museum has a collection of over 4,000 works and growing including works of gold and silver, paintings, porcelain, and bronze. The Shuvalov Palace was also restored as part of the museum activities. Carl Faberge, one of the main jewelers of the Faberge family, has many of his famous works on display in the museum including the famous “objets de fantaisie” and other masterpieces such as vases, accessories, table clocks, picture frames, and silver products produced in "original Russian style."
