By: Marathon Tours & Travel Held on King George Island off the Antarctic Peninsula, the Antarctica Marathon & Half Marathon courses takes runners along a network of hilly gravel roads that connect and pass the scientific research bases of Uruguay, Chile, China and Russia. Course conditions can vary year to year but runners may encounter ice, mud and slush along the way. Held at the tail end of the Antarctic summertime, race-day temperatures can range from 15 to 34 F with wind gusts that can easily reach 40 mph. Heavy snow is rare but light flurries are common. Vibram is renowned as the world leader in high-performance rubber soles for consumers with active lifestyles. The company prides itself on developing safe and durable soles that enable their wearers to conquer extreme conditions. As presenting sponsor of this year’s Antarctic race, Vibram will supply footwear to all participants. “Vibram is the ideal presenting sponsor for the Antarctica Marathon,” says Thom Gilligan, president of Marathon Tours & Travel and Antarctica Marathon race director. “Their participation will lend an additional layer of safety and style to this event.” With more than 70 years of trusted technology and quality behind Vibram soles, we look forward to playing an integral role for participants to conquer the treacherous terrain of the Antarctica Marathon,” said Allon Cohne, CMO, Vibram. Athletes will travel an average of 6,500 miles each; first to Buenos Aires, Argentina, before departing to Ushuaia, Argentina, the southern-most city in the world. There they will board two chartered Russian icebreakers for a two-day crossing of the Drake Passage. The 14-day expedition also includes a number of landings on the continent, sea kayaking and wildlife viewing.
