8 simple tricks to ACTUALLY become fluent in a foreign language

You can spend years studying your new language. You can memorize all the grammar rules and even know lots of words. However, when you go to speak in your new language with a stranger you FREEZE and nothing comes out.

So how do you ACTUALLY become fluent in your new language? Here are 8 simple steps:

1 - Do something different: Most people study a foreign language in school and assume this is the only way to learn. We keep doing it that way even through it doesn’t seem to work. Stop. Do something different.

2 - Drop the books and talk to real people: It is easy to get lost in the books and forget that the whole point is talking to real people. Start saying “Hi, how are you?” once day even if the person you are talking to doesn’t even speak your new language.

3 - Talk every day: Find some way to talk everyday in your new language. It is critical get your mouth moving. If you cannot find real person to talk to, practice speaking out loud and imagine a person you are talking to. This really works.

4 - Focus on spoken language: Reading, writing and grammar use a different brain process than speaking. Practice building sentences and conversations without and books or text. Warm up your mouth and ears in your new language

5 - Give up on perfection: Remember, the more you chase after “perfect” grammar the harder it gets to speak. Even native speakers make mistakes all the time. Focus on basic communication, not perfection.

6 - Say something embarrassing: This is a funny paradox. The number one barrier to fluency is lack of confidence. Take on intentionally saying something embarrassing in your new language once a day. This will “bulletproof” your confidence and really increase your fluency

7 - Find a learning buddy: Find one person in your life and make a PACT to talk together everyday for 21 days. Even if you are both just starting out in a new language, find some way to have a simple conversation about real things.

8 - Relax and enjoy your new language: Notice if you are tense or uncomfortable when you think about your new language. Somehow, find a way relax and enjoy speaking. Memorize a few jokes or make up a silly story and tell it to a friend. Relax it’s only language.
