OXFORD, U.K. - June 25, 2015 - PRLog -- The nature of auctions makes them uncertain ventures, highly dependent on the strength of the lots and their relevance to the bidders in attendance. Mallams are therefore delighted to report that their Cheltenham and Abingdon Sales Rooms earlier this month were successes, both days delivering in terms of bidders and sales made.

Cheltenham

Mallams’ Cheltenham Sales Room took place on Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th of June. The first day was dedicated to English and Continental Porcelain, Pottery and Glassware items. The second was a Furniture, Paintings Jewellery and Silver auction.

Impressive sales included a trio of Derby yellow ground teacups and saucers, circa 1795. This beautiful crockery sported puce crown, crossed batons and D marks, and sold for £2,800, £2,600 and £2,200 (Lots 40, 41 and 42).

The biggest sale of the two days was Lot 653, an oil-on-canvas portrait by Alfred Emile Leopold Stevens (Belgium, 1823 - 1906). The half-length portrait featured a young lady looking over her left shoulder, signed and date 1891. The striking painting made an impression, selling for £3,200.

Abingdon

The Abingdon Sales Room also took place over two days, Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th of June. Monday was the appropriately themed Part Two of the Collection and Chattels of an Oxfordshire Gentleman (Part One was sold at the House And Garden Sale in May). Tuesday was Furniture And Works of Art (from other vendors).

Lot 1131 saw the best sale of the two days. With its scrolling brass swan neck handle, beautiful timber inlays and short bracket feet, the Georgian Mahogany Tea Caddy earned itself £1,900; unsurprising given its highly decorative value.

A nineteenth-century continental porcelain snuff box also sold particularly well. The box is decorated in moulded rockii decoration, highlighted in gilt with handpainted scenes of figures within landscapes to all side of the box. Opening the lid reveals a painted interior together with a small Berlin porcelain basket. This beautiful piece (Lot 1127) sold for £1,100.
