FOSTER CITY, Calif. - July 2, 2015 - PRLog -- NAAFA, a civil rights organization working for Equality at Every Size, was shocked to learn that emergency medical devices promoted as potentially life-saving for those who suffer severe, life-threatening allergies to things like nuts, shell fish or bee stings, will not work for most women and for anyone with a BMI of 30 or more.

EpiPen and Auvi-Q are prescription epinephrine auto-injectors for emergency treatment of anaphylaxis. The medication must be injected into the thigh muscle. Skin to muscle depth determines whether or not this potentially life-saving treatment will make it to the muscle. The auto-injector needle length of these devices is 15.88 mm and 15.75 mm respectively, which is too short in 68 percent of patients recently studied. Women are 6.4 times more likely than men to be at risk of injection failure.

To make matters worse, the first study to reveal this short-coming was conducted in 2005. For ten years, Mylan, the manufacturer of EpiPen has known that they need to provide a product choice with a longer needle and possibly even a larger dosage of medication as dosage appears to be currently based on body weight. They have done nothing,

NAAFA Board of Directors members reached out to both Mylan and Sanofi U.S., the manufacturer of Auvi-Q, in March of this year. Although both manufacturers acknowledged receipt of our inquiry, nothing further has been done. Subsequently, NAAFA has created a petition on Change.org demanding that these pharmaceutical companies take action and provide a product choice that will work for women and all people of large body size. Please support these efforts by signing our petition today at: https://www.change.org/p/mylan-sanofi-us-united-states-fe...

Physicians need to be informed. Patients need to be informed. It could be a matter of life or death!

Founded in 1969, NAAFA is a non-profit human rights organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for fat people. NAAFA works to eliminate discrimination based on body size and provide fat people with the tools for self-empowerment through public education, advocacy, and member support.
