By: Mother Goose on the Loose The Home Kit is based on the MGOL library program, that in 2002, was recognized by the Godfrey Award for Excellence in Public Library Services for Families and Children. With the KickStarter campaign, parents and children will be given the opportunity to sing nursery rhymes, ring bells to the beat, and take turns pulling Humpty Dumpty off of his wall at home just like in the class. All of these activities help children build social, emotional, and language skills. The Home Kit will enable parents and children to continue building these skills, while also being more affordable to reach a larger audience. According to the founder, Dr. Betsy Diamant-Cohen “These kits have the potential to boost children’s literacy skills though playful interactions with their parents. The kit’s contents enable parents to effortlessly share healthy, research-supported practices with their children in a fun engaging atmosphere.” Parents using the Home Kit with their children can help bridge “the 30 million word gap”, can increase the number of vocabulary words children know before entering kindergarten, and give children practice at taking turns and thinking before they act. Studies show that all of these practices build learning potential, improve school performance and create a positive sense of self. Children with this type of strong start have higher earning potential, more success at long-term relationships, and significantly lower rates of incarceration as adults. By giving parents easy and fun ways along with age-appropriate tools for interacting with their children, MGOL seeks to affect positive change on a large scale.
