CHICAGO - Sept. 14, 2015 - PRLog -- After traveling 3,000 miles of the Great Lakes region on foot, bike, or by kayak, Loreen Niewenhuis is releasing her third book and embarking on a book tour in the Chicago area. The Michigan native recently released "A 1,000-Mile Great Lakes Island Adventure", an exploration of the diverse islands in the Great Lakes basin (published by Crickhollow Books of Milwaukee). Niewenhuis will visit five locations giving her dynamic presentation -- featuring videos and photos from her adventure -- about the islands of the Great Lakes. "This island adventure has been the most fascinating journey," Niewenhuis said. "I had been to several islands in the Great Lakes, but had no idea that there are tens of thousandsof islands to explore. I learned the most on this final adventure, and I am thankful to have had the opportunity to undertake these journeys and share them with such an eager readership."

Always a firm supporter of independent bookstores, Niewenhuis has released her books to independently-owned bookstores before making them available to the larger web-based outlets. Her adventures and books have been featured in USA Today, on NPR, and in Country Woman Magazine among many other outlets.

Niewenhuis' Chicago area tour:

Saturday, October 17 at the Newberry Library, Ruggles Hall, 60 W. Walton St., at1 p.m.
Monday, October 19 at the Northbrook REI, 888 Willow Rd., at 7 p.m.

"We love Loreen's work here at Brilliant Books (in Traverse City, Mich.)," said store owner Peter Makin, "Not only is she crazy enough to walk 1,000 miles around a Great Lake, but she is talented enough to write a fascinating account of the adventure.  She captures the essence of hiking the Great Lakes shorelines and islands.  Her writing has inspired a lot of readers to follow at least parts of her path."

"A 1,000-Mile Great Lakes Island Adventure" explores islands in each of the five Great Lakes and many in their connecting waters. From the rugged wilderness of Isle Royale in Lake Superior to the bustling streets of Montreal Island in the St. Lawrence River, Niewenhuis uses her signature humor, sensitivity and knowledge of the ecosystem to craft an engaging and entertaining story.

Niewenhuis began her journey with hiking the perimeter of Lake Michigan in 2009, at 45-years-old, as her sons were heading off to college. Her "mid-life crisis evolved into a mid-life adventure." She pulled on her Keen boots, backed a backpack and set off from Chicago's Navy Pier heading east back to Michigan along Lake Michigan's southern edge. Sixty-four days of hiking and two pairs of boots later, she returned to Navy Pier from the north and had the beginnings of her first book "A 1,000-Mile Walk on the Beach". It received numerous awards including Heartland Indie Best-Seller List in 2011 and Best Non-Fiction Beach read 2012.

For her second book, released in 2013, "A 1,000-Mile Great Lakes Walk" she hiked portions of the shoreline of all five Great Lakes. This book takes the reader on a ground-level journey through the beauty, history and ecology of the Great Lakes. This book earned her a "Great Lakes Great Reads" award in 2013.  Loreen Niewenhuis' Chicago book tour for her third book "A 1,000-Mile Great Lakes Island Adventure" is October 17 - 22.
