Attorney Michelle O’Neil Presents at “The Impact of Marriage Equality on Texas Law” Seminar

DALLAS - Dec. 2, 2015 - PRLog -- The continuing legal education event was hosted by the State Bar of Texas and its LGBT law section. O’Neil’s portion, “Divorce, Custody, and Other Emerging Family Law Issues After Obergefell," shed light on new Texas family law issues following Obergefell v. Hodges, the ruling that made same-sex marriage legal nationwide.

The presentation focused on the retroactive effect the Obergefell decision has had on Texas divorce issues like community property, date of marriage, presumptions of parentage, application of Texas maintenance laws, and various child-related issues. Attorney O'Neil co-presented with Austin attorney Karen Langsley.

Obergefell v. Hodges was decided in a split U.S. Supreme Court ruling last June. While 36 states were already issuing their own same-sex marriage licenses prior to the decision, Texas remained one of the states where the ban on same-sex marriage persisted.

Michelle May O'Neil has long been a strong supporter of LGBT rights and was the first attorney in Texas to win an appellate case granting standing to sue for a non-biological parent from a same-sex couple.
