Metro Parent Magazine Introduces Turning Teen Programs to Help Moms, Daughter Talk Puberty

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. - March 24, 2016 - PRLog -- Metro Parent Magazine, the go-to magazine for Southeast Michigan parents, is letting mothers know that help with "the puberty talk" has finally arrived thanks to a new business, Turning Teen.

To get parents and kids talking about the awkward topic, two pediatricians created Turning Teen to offer workshops for mothers and daughters about girls' changing bodies.  Metro-Detroit based doctors Lisa Klein and Carrie Leff lead interactive programs in a casual, creative environment with medically-accurate information. Turning Teen workshops are for girls ages 8-14, covering the topics of male and female anatomy, the physical and emotional changes related to puberty, how to care for a girl's changing body, and reproduction.

"The program is unique in the sense that mother and daughter can hear the same information at the same time," adds mom Rebecca DeRaud, who attended a workshop with her 10-year-old.

Since their launch in October 2015 they have had over a dozen workshops, helping over 150 girls understand how their bodies work and what changes they can expect in their tween years.  Mothers leave the two-hour workshop relieved that "the talk" has finally been started, and are pleasantly surprised that conversations naturally continued to happen after the workshop ended.

(excerpt from article) That's just what happened for Robyn Weiss, when she and her daughter Hayley were driving home from their workshop. Her daughter "just unloaded," mom says. "For the first time, (she) had the words to be able to ask the questions she wanted to ask from the beginning."

Kids do not have a lot of opportunity to learn accurate information about their bodies.  Dr. Klein warns that "kids are often gathering misinformation from unreliable sources, such as the internet and their friends. "  Dr. Leff adds, "Schools only spend a few hours a year talking about puberty and sex."

One mother summed it up best. "Turning Teen is a gift to moms and daughters! It's a comfortable way to discuss an often uncomfortable topic."
