Rikers Island Inmate Who Was Assaulted by Another Inmate to Receive $130,000.00 Settlement

NEW YORK - Aug. 2, 2016 - PRLog -- A Rikers Island inmate who was being detained awaiting trial when he was assaulted by another inmate has agreed to accept the City of New York's settlement offer in the amount of $130,000.00 to finally resolve the Federal Lawsuit he filed last year in the Eastern District of New York.

The Rikers Island inmate who was assaulted was being housed in a low-risk area of the detention center at Rikers when the correction officer's announced that he was being transferred to another area. Although the inmate expressed his concern to the correction officers that he was afraid for his safety because the area he was being transferred to housed violent criminals and gang members, they ignored his pleas. Once transferred, the inmate who was assaulted attempted to use the phone, and while doing so, he was attacked by a Bloods Gang Member. The Bloods Gang Member hit the assaulted inmate about the face with a weapon he made and fractured the inmate's jaw. The inmate's fractured jaw required surgery which included metal wiring and plates.

The inmate who was assaulted also alleged that the correction officers delayed in getting him the immediate medical attention that he needed. The case was settled before The Honorable Robert M. Levy on August 1, 2016.
