EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. - Oct. 17, 2019 - PRLog -- Savas Beatie, an award-winning independent publishing company specializing in military and general history titles distributed worldwide, has been notified that "Lee is Trapped and Must be Taken: Eleven Fateful Days after Gettysburg: July 4 to July 14, 1863 by Thomas J. Ryan  and Richard R. Schaus has been selected as the winner of  the 2019 Hugh G. Earnhart Civil War Scholarship Award presented by the Mahoning Valley Civil War Round Table. Named after one of the round table's founding members, the award is presented to recipients for their outstanding contributions in the field of Civil War historiography.

"I am honored by this recognition and accept the award as an acknowledgement that our book contributes original content and analysis of the post-Gettysburg period, particularly pertaining to Union and Confederate intelligence operations that impacted the outcome," stated Tom Ryan.

Rick Schaus continued, "Tom and I set out with a mission to produce the comprehensive account of a relatively unknown but critical part of the Gettysburg Campaign. With the assistance of the outstanding team at Savas Beatie we believe that we accomplished that mission. The selection of our book as the winner of this prestigious award helps confirm that belief."

"This is a brave award, justly bestowed," explained publisher Theodore P. Savas, "because the scholarship in Lee is Trapped and Must be Taken swims upstream against conventional wisdom about General Meade's real choices and options during the retreat, and demonstrates for all to see how the survival of the Army of Northern Virginia hung from a much thinner thread than previously understood. Tom Ryan and Rick Schaus have produced a lasting piece of scholarship, and all of us at Savas Beatie are thrilled to have published their work."

About the Authors: Thomas J. "Tom" Ryan earned a B.A. from the University of Maryland and an M.A. from American University. He retired after 38 years in intelligence-related capacities for the US Army and the Department of Defense. His book Spies, Scouts, and Secrets in the Gettysburg Campaign won the Bachelder-Coddington Literary Award and the Gettysburg Civil War Round Table Distinguished Book Award.

Richard R. Schaus, Sergeant Major, US Army (Ret.), served on active duty for more than 30 years in a variety of army and joint military intelligence assignments both at home and abroad.
