INDIANAPOLIS - Aug. 30, 2022 - PRLog -- WHO: The public is invited to Garfield Park Arts Center to help find a cure for dystonia, a little-known but surprisingly common neurological movement disorder. The event is organized by Sarah Ernstberger, an educator who has experienced chronic, painful muscle spasms in her neck and hand since being diagnosed with dystonia as a child. Also on the event planning committee is Sunshine Fox, whose 12-year-old son Aidan was diagnosed at age 3, but the underlying cause for his complex case remains unknown. As volunteers with the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation (DMRF), Ernstberger and Fox have organized multiple special events and traveled to Washington DC to advocate on behalf of the dystonia community for federal research funding.

The Dystonia Medical Research Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to advancing research for improved dystonia treatments and ultimately a cure, promoting awareness, and supporting the well-being of affected individuals and families.

WHAT: The 6th Indy Hunt for a Cure for Dystonia is a family-friendly scavenger hunt and fair to promote greater dystonia awareness and raise funds for medical research. All ages welcome. Registration is $20 for adults/$15 for children, $60 for family of four, includes t-shirt. Proceeds benefit the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation.

Dystonia is characterized by excessive, involuntary muscle contractions that result in twisting, repetitive muscle movements as well as sustained, abnormal postures of the body and limbs. There are many types of dystonia that impact people of all ages and backgrounds. An estimated 250,000 Americans are affected. Up to 70% of individuals with dystonia are initially misdiagnosed due to a lack of awareness even among many medical professionals.
