Dr. Rajan Mahtani praises decision by present Zambian President

LUSAKA, Zambia - Sept. 6, 2022 - PRLog -- Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani, founder and current Chairman of the Prison Fellowship Zambia recently announced his support towards the quest by President of Zambia Hakainde Hichilema. On the occasion of Africa Day, the Zambian President announced his plans to abolish the death penalty completely. Dr. Rajan Mahtani supported this decision by saying that death penalty is a degrading, cruel and inhumane practice. Dr. Mahtani also highlighted that there is a growing consensus toward abolishing death penalty completely and this trend can be observed across Zambia too. The killing of convicts with capital punishment or death penalty does not provide any solution for the Zambian government. At the same time, condition across the majority of the Zambian prisons is extremely dangerous with cramped living conditions, lack of basic hygiene and safety as well as lack of improvement for the prisoners. Attempts toward releasing these prisoners after passing correctional programs are already under progress. These include collaborative initiatives among the Zambian Government, Parole Board Zambia, and Correctional Facilities towards strategic decongestion of prisons in Zambia.

Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani further stated that even though past Presidents have strategically avoided the death penalty row by mercy prerogatives, none of them actually worked towards a permanent solution. The last death penalty was given in the year 1997 and since then, the Government is working towards solutions for the welfare of prisoners in Zambia. As such, the decision from the present Zambian President is a step in the right direction.
