Chroma Unveils Game-Changing Bidirectional DC Power Supplies for Battery Testing and Simulation

Bidirectional DC Power Supplies released by Chroma include features for Battery Characterization, Performance Validation, and Battery Simulation for EV and renewable energy applications.

FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif. - June 5, 2023 - PRLog -- Chroma Systems Solutions, Inc., a leading provider of power conversion test equipment, unveils game-changing battery characterization, performance validation, and battery simulation features of its 62000D bidirectional DC power supplies. Chroma's two-quadrant operation that provides both DC power output and regenerative DC loading now enables battery charge/discharge testing as well as battery simulation.

The 62000D bidirectional DC power supply serves as a versatile solution for source and load operations, particularly in testing the electrical CC-CV characteristics of batteries. It facilitates various tests, including capacity tests under different temperature requirements and charging and discharging tests in the End-of-Line (EOL) phase. The 62000D is capable of performing all these test items independently.

Designed to accommodate common EV/HEV batteries, the 62000D includes a constant power operating envelop that allows for testing 12V/24V/48V low voltage packs and 200V/400V/800V/1800V high-voltage battery packs. It features a built-in Charge-Discharge mode specifically tailored for battery testing, allowing measurement of battery voltage and current, as well as calculation of battery capacity (Ah). Users have the flexibility to implement cycling tests or auto-stop charge and discharge tests by setting cut-off conditions.

Beyond battery testing, Chroma bidirectional DC power supplies are also valuable for battery simulation and testing renewable energy power systems including PV/storage hybrid inverters and power conversion systems (PCS). The 62000D is pre-compliant with LV123 and LV148 standards, making it suitable for EV component testing, including bidirectional on-board chargers (BOBC), bidirectional DC converters, DC-AC motor drivers, and power conversion simulation tests in both directions. Its high-speed CV dynamic response slope, with control up to 180V/ms, enables efficient electrical characteristics testing in line with vehicle guidelines.

62000D models offer power ratings of 6kW, 12kW, 18kW, 36kW, and 45kW with parallel and series operation capabilities and voltage ranges spanning from 0 to 100V/600V/1200V/1800V. With its four times auto-ranging operation range, the 62000D can cover a wide range of low voltage/high current and high voltage/low current scenarios for devices under test. This consolidation of multiple DC power supplies into a single 62000D unit brings space and cost savings when integrated into standard ATE systems or laboratories. Additionally, the 62000D boasts a high-speed transient response of less than 1.5ms, enabling seamless and rapid current conversion between the two quadrants.
