LAS VEGAS - Sept. 1, 2023 - PRLog -- According to statistics, 1 in 285 children in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer before their 20th birthday, and globally more than 300,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. With such alarming figures as these, healthcare organizations, advocacy groups, patients and families of cancer patients join together to sound the alarm for awareness and financial support each September during National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

For families whose children have been diagnosed with cancer and undergoing treatment, or are coping with the loss of their child, Las Vegas Urban League WIC wants families to know that counselors are available to assist families in any way they can.

"Our team is committed to helping families above and beyond their needs," Shannon Johnson, WIC Flamingo East Clinic Office Coordinator, said. "We can bring cancer-patient families together to share their stories, talk about new treatments, identify cancer awareness events taking place in the community, identify caregivers trained to improve the lives of children battling cancer and much more."

Ways Southern Nevadans can support patients during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month include:
  • Wear Gold, the color of pediatric cancer awareness throughout the month of September to show support for patients who have had cancer or are currently undergoing cancer treatment.
  • Share Your Story, Photos and Messages of support on social media using the hashtags #ChildhoodCancer, #ChildhoodCancerAwawrenessMonth or #CCAM.
  • Go to the National Cancer Institute website at: www.Cancer.gov to learn more about childhood cancer or to make a donation.
