DELAFIELD, Wis. - Oct. 10, 2023 - PRLog -- Brought together by a death in the family, Lou McManus and teenaged Kapi McManus think they have nothing in common until a mutual love of history, both local and personal, leads them to a surprising discovery about their family in Water the Color of Slate, the fourth novel from author Mary Ann Noe.

In a small mid-19th century Wisconsin town, Lou's great-grandmother Louise Wright falls for Ho-Chunk Walking Elk, a union that produces a daughter, though Walking Elk has no knowledge of this child, having been removed to Nebraska. Three generations later, Louise's great-granddaughter struggles to face her prejudices and racism as well as reconcile with her own granddaughter over issues tearing them apart.

The launch event take place at 6:00 pm on October 19, 2023 at Tricia's Troops Cancer Connection in Delafield. Tricia's Troops is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization providing financial support and services to Waukesha Country cancer patients and their families. Noe, a mentor for ABCD (After Breast Cancer Diagnosis), will discuss her new book, how she became a successful author in retirement, and how being a cancer survivor has impacted her writing journey. The event is free and open to the public.  A portion of the proceeds from sales will be donated in support of Tricia's Troops programs.

"When I wrote Water the Color of Slate, I wanted to reaffirm the human need to connect and support, especially in times of crisis or tough decisions, times we shouldn't have to face alone. The book is a perfect fit for pairing with Tricia's Troops, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing many kinds of support to those facing the challenges of cancer, be it patients or those who care for them," says Noe.

Mary Ann Noe is the author of the novels A Handful of Pearls and To Know Her, as well as the children's fantasy book Hannah's Eyes. Mary Ann is a Pushcart Prize nominee and has also published short fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Her work has appeared in numerous literary journals, including Dash Literary Journal, Choeofplerin Press, and Pure Slush. Now retired from teaching high school English and psychology, Mary Ann has more time to write and lives in happy communion with nature in Wisconsin. Visit https://maryannnoe.com/
