Voyage to "La Mer" with the Philharmonic

November concert showcases a Pulitzer Prize winning composer

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Oct. 26, 2023 - PRLog -- Experience the lush and beautiful sounds of the sea, or "La Mer" in French, as the Michigan Philharmonic takes music lovers on a magical sea voyage in its November return to St. Kenneth's Church.

"Music of La Mer" is planned for Friday, Nov. 10 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the church, which is located on Haggerty Road in Plymouth and will feature the music of Handel, Debussy and renowned Chinese-American composer Zhou Long.

Music selections for the evening will include "Water Music" by George F. Handel; "Overture to The Wreckers" by British composer Ethel Smyth; "The Deep, Deep Sea" by Zhou Long; "Pavane Op. 50" by Gabriel Faure; and "La Mer" for chamber orchestra by Claude Debussy.

"The Deep, Deep Sea" features solo alto flute and piccolo, harp, timpani and strings.

During the performance, the Phil's principal flute player, Dennis Carter II, will be featured as well as the Madonna Chorale, the University of Detroit Mercy Chorus and the Michigan Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Sinfonia under the direction of Hektor Qyteti.

Zhou Long is internationally recognized for creating a unique body of music that brings together the aesthetic concepts and musical elements of East and West. He is the winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for his first opera, "Madame White Snake."

There will also be a pre-concert talk with Dr. Zhou beginning at 6:45 p.m.

As one of Michigan's finest orchestras, the Plymouth-based Philharmonic celebrates a wide range of classical and pops music that connects, engages, and creates unique experiences. This year, the symphony is also celebrating its 25th year being led by Music Director and Conductor Nan Washburn.
