Adding Anti-Fall Mechanisms to Walkers to Improve Elderly Life

TAOYUAN, Taiwan - March 26, 2024 - PRLog -- In an aging society, more and more elderly people need wheelchairs and caregivers for assistance, as mobility issues affect their quality of life in later years.

Dr. Hung-Chih Lu, who self-funds public welfare projects in technology and art, has provided a simple yet effective solution. He excels at using ingenious methods to utilize mature manufacturing processes to achieve miraculous creations. Positive people call him a magician of science, while negative ones criticize him for being clever in a trivial way.

Considering the progression from using canes and walkers to ultimately needing wheelchairs, he thought if it were possible to maintain the use of walkers without progressing to wheelchairs, this could halt the process and allow seniors to have a better quality of life in their later years.

After extensive research, he finally developed an anti-fall walker and applied for the first-generation patent in 2013 and a second-generation patent in 2017.

Dr. Lu has hundreds of inventions from chips to macro cities. Everyone is for the public good and never for profit.

His solution involves adding an anti-fall mechanism to walkers, as shown in Figure 1. The key improvement is to lower the center of gravity as close to the ground and as far back as possible, reducing the risk of the walker tipping backward. Additionally, a strong Y or T-shaped elastic band is added to provide cushioning when the elderly lose strength in their legs or slip, preventing injury, as shown in Figure 2. Other features include an 'n'-shaped handle for hanging handbags, which forms a closed loop when gripped, making it less likely to fall or be stolen, and a phone holder for hands-free operation to ensure safety while moving.

Everyone admires tech tycoons who attract all the attention and spotlight. Dr. Hung-Chih Lu invented silicon photonics in 1999, but the world only knew of Intel's development starting in 2001. Such examples are not rare in his case. Despite such harsh realities, he still does not plan to change. Whether it's technological inventions or artistic creations, he imbues them with love and care for the world. The thought of having to raise funds, establish a company, operate, and be responsible for shareholders' profits will affect his creativity and would cause his work to lose its warmth. Therefore, he never does it.
